A secret society is the one which works in a manner that its activities are oblivious to non-members. There are a wide variety of secret societies in the world. You might have heard names of Freemasons, Illuminati, Opus Dei etc. These are the obscure societies functioning in various parts of the world under different agendas. Let us have a look at top 10 of these camouflaged societies.
10. Ku Klux Klan:
The group was initiated by six young people who rose to take revenge from the Blacks who had won their freedom in Civil War (South 1860s). After managing to fortifying their rights, the Klan moved towards the school buses court laws which advocated anti-racism. The klans bombed down ten schools in Michigan. The KKK harms those who speak against them. They would usually kidnap and hang the blacks. But eventually as the blacks got stronger, the Klans became weaker. Today only a few number of Klans exist.
9. The Priory of Sion:
Priory of sion is considered a hoax that came about in 1956 by Pierre Plantard who called it a secret society. In the renowned books like Holy Blood and Holy Grail, priory of sion is shown as a realistic society having its origins in 1099 having brilliant Grand masters like Isaac Newton and Leonardo da Vinci.
8. Majestic 12:
In July 1947, rumors spread out that an alien spaceship had crashed near Roswell, Mexico. A committee was formed with the name “Majestic 12” to have a look out for the spaceship. This society constitutes of people from influential professions like scientists, government officials and even the military. FBI considers the documents of this committee on UFO sightings as completely phony.
7. The Knights Templar:
Started off as a unit consisting of skilled knights, The Knights Templar today has become associated with legends concerning secrets and mysteries handed down from ancient times. This group which initially had nine members had the charge of protecting Christian pilgrims who were on their way to visiting the shrines in the Holy Land. The connection between the modern and the ancient Templars is non-existant.
6. Sons of liberty:
The group was not made with a secretive purpose traditionally; rather it existed as a group of patriots prior to the revolutionary war. The patriots came together for a single purpose which was to protect the rights of colonies from British. The name “sons of liberty” was coined by British for these patriots who carried out their resistive activities under a liberty tree in Boston. Today signs of Sons of liberty are found in Walt Disney Pictures and video games.
5. Rosicrucians:
This secret society focuses more on the inner self of a human being, the mysteries of life and universe. It teaches its students the topics of wisdom including philosophy, metaphysics and mysticism. This order was founded in Germany in 17th century. The name Rosicrucian comes from the Latin rosae (rose) and crux (cross) meaning the ‘rose cross’. Today there are many Rosicrucian organizations helping in inner self development of an individual, advocating freedom of spirit, soul and mind.
4. Opus Dei
Also called “The work”, Opus dei is Latin for work of God. It is an institution of Catholic Church. It advocates that your work and daily activities are occasions for getting closer to God, for serving people and helping in betterment of society. The institution provides spiritual means to its members to help them become good Christians. The famous novel “Da vinci code” by Dan Brown has portrayed Opus Dei as a secret organization interested in wealth and power. However, since the church itself forbids secret societies, thus has refuted any such associations.
3. The Illuminati:
Started off as the order of five i.e. constituting only five members on its bench, the illuminati grew to 2,000 members over a span of ten years. The word illuminati comes from Latin illuminatus meaning ‘enlightened’. There is a common perception that illuminati seeks to control the world. It wants to create circumstances of global concerns and advocates “The new world order” as the solution. It must be noted that The illuminati consists of a private board of elite who control the world’s major banks.
2. Freemasons:
Commonly known as having checkered floors, this organization is most suspicious in terms of its activities. Their symbols are associated with medieval stonemasons, a square and compass is carved into stone. Freemasons use certain signs, grips and words for legitimate entries. Among Muslims, this organization is believed to be associated to “Dajjal”-The anti-christ. In Christianity, Roman Catholic Church shows its opposition towards this group as they believe that the group’s teachings conflict with that of the church.
1. Skull and Bones:
It is an elite undergrad Yale students society that is located in a windowless building called Tomb. Influential people like the ex-American president George W Bush are one of its members. The obsession with skulls, coffins and bones is probably a symbol of the mortality in human beings. Inside the building the students work according to the skulls and bones time which is five minutes ahead of the rest of the world. The members drink from the skulls various refreshments but never alcohol.
