Olympic medals are indeed the dream of every athlete. As you might already know that London is the first city to be chosen three times for hosting the olympic games. The Olympics is the event when the athletes are required to show the skills they have honed in the past four years or so. Surely, the olympics this year have proved to be the greatest of them all. Olympics 2012 is marked by some spectacular performances from the side of the world class athletes. A number of gold medals were given in recognition to the extra ordinary performances and olympic records given by the athletes. Furthermore, a number of world records were also set, thus giving a new target to the athletes who didn’t get a chance to compete in this panorama and prestigious event. 10. Un Guk Kim                                                                            

The North Korean weightlifter set a new world record for this year by lifting a weight of 327 kg (721 lbs). He won the gold in the 62 kg division which is indeed quite an achievement for him. The record which Kim broke had been previously set by Zhang Jie.

9. Missy Franklin

Now here we have the athlete who is the best example of commitment and courage. Although she was one of the youngest athletes competing in the olympics 2012, still she managed to grapple four gold medals. She is also the current record holder for the 200 meter backstroke class. The four gold medals were won by her in the 100 m Medley Relay finals, 200 m backstroke finals, 200 m Freestyle relay final and in the 100 m backstroke final.

8. Sun Yang

With two gold medals under his belt, Sun yang is yet another Chinese athlete who was the icon of the Olympics 2012. So, it can be said that the London’s Aquatic Center was fully charged this year, as a number of world records were broken here. He won his olympic gold medals in The Men’s 1500 and 400 m Freestyle Finals. Although he made a false start, still he was able to take China all the way to the top.

7. Lu Xiaojun

Although China was unable to beat America in the Olympics 2012, still it managed to make its mark. All the credit goes to Lu Xiaojun and team mates who really worked very hard. Being the world record holder in the snatch and total weights category, Lu really outplayed all other world class athletes. He also won a gold medal in the 77 kg snatch competition and at the same time managed to set a new world record.

6. 3000m Team Pursuit

Just like The Aquatics Center, there was much going on at the Velodrome during the London Olympics. For the Great Britain Fans, the events turned out to be quite astonishing as the Team GB managed to make 9 gold medals out of the 10 major events. Not only the men, but also the women team managed to earn the gold in 3000 meters team pursuit.

5. Men’s Cycling: Team Sprint

The Men’s Cycling event was also topped the Great Britain Team. They were indeed the heart favorites to won the gold medal. Although the had to face a pretty tough competition from the side of the French Team, still Sir Chris Hoy managed to take the team at the top.

4. The United States 100 m Women’s Relay Team

In making America lead the overall gold medal count in the olympics 2012, a lot of credit goes to the female athletes. The U.S 100 m Women’s Relay Team really put forward a great battle with the Jamaican and all other rival teams. The team included Tianna Madison, Carmelita Jeter, Allyson Felix and Bianca Knight. Not to forget the world record that they broke which was previously held East Germany.

3. Jamaica 100 m Men’s Relay Team

The Jamaica team was indeed the strongest of them all, as it included the bullet Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Nesta Carter and Michael Frater. With these individuals in the team, Jamaica was destined to win the gold by beating the United States team. The team also set a new world record for the time of 36.84 seconds.

2. Ye Shiwen

The star icon and the all eye catching of athlete of London Olympics 2012, is the 16 year old Chinese Swimmer, Ye Shiwen. She managed to take two gold medals in the 200 and 400 meters individual medley events and also managed to set a new world record for the 400 meter event. Not to forget that Ye Shiwen had also made a pretty controversial statement asserting that China works much harder than other countries and that the international media is quite jealous of her breaking the world record.

Known to be one of the best Kenyan middle distance runners in the world, David was really on the go during the Olympics 2012. Not only did he break the 800 m world record, but also managed to make the hopes of Kenyan people gloom all over the world. Although the Kenyan athletes are the least funded of them all, still they managed to rise above most of the top class athletes. So how is that for some new world records.
